Despite the number off confirmed Covid-19 cases on the island of Ireland having risen to nine, the Department of Health says the focus here is still very much on containing the virus to prevent it spreading.
Six of the cases are in the Republic while three are in Northern Ireland,

The Department has been reassured by the fact that all the confirmed cases in the Republic have occurred in people who have travelled home from infected regions in Italy.

Deputy Chief Medical Officer Dr Ronan Glynn said there is no evidence of widespread or sustained community transmission in Ireland, unlike some other European countries.

The virus is spread through direct contact with an infected person's bodily fluids, mainly droplets spread from coughing and sneezing, which is why it is so important the people wash their hands properly, practice respiratory etiquette, and try to avoid touching their faces.

Around 80% of cases of Covid-19 will be a mild to moderate illness, close to 14% have severe disease and around 6% are critical.

Generally, you need to be 15 minutes or more in the vicinity of an infected person, within 1-2 metres, to be considered at-risk or a close contact.

The four new cases confirmed last night involving two male and two female patients from the western part of the country are now being treated in hospital and efforts will continue today to track down all close contacts.

Worldwide over 93,000 people have so far being infected with Covid-19, with over 3,200 deaths.

Yesterday also saw a sharp rise in the number of confirmed cases in the UK which now stands at 87, including a small number of cases suspected to be from community transmissions.

Department of Health Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan said that a level of anxiety and fear among the general public about the virus is understandable, but such factors can give rise to harmful stereotypes.

He said the virus knows no borders or race and it is essential that decisions regarding responses to it are proportionate, necessary, and based on specific public health advice.
